Bathtub OverviewThe tub is one of the most useful and important elements inside the bathroom. It can perform a variety of functions, including washing the dog, cleaning and soaking large household objects, even doing the laundry! Of course, its primary function is to provide a relaxing bathing experience for those who receive so much stress from work or from home. There are tubs in different colors, styles, and shapes to suit your every need. It can also be made from a variety of materials, and each has unique qualities that can work to your advantage (or disadvantage). Here are some of the most common bathtub materials used and its properties. Acrylic. This type of bathtub is made from vacuum-formed sheets of acrylic, layered on top of each other to provide resistance to chipping and cracking. These are usually the lightest and most inexpensive of bathtub materials. Cast iron. Made from molten iron poured into a mold, this type of tub is perhaps the most expensive of its kind in the market. It is virtually impossible to scratch or dent, and it is resistant to chemicals. Ceramic tile. Homeowners who want a ceramic tile tub would have to concede having it done inside the bathroom. Wood studs and concrete boards make up its form, and ceramic tiles are set with mortar and grout. It can become quite difficult to clean as small cracks in the tiles and grout may accumulate dirt. Cultured marble. The material is made from mixing limestone with resin and finishing with a gel coat. The finished tub will appear to be made of real marble. It is more expensive than acrylic tubs but less expensive than iron ones. Fiberglass or gelcoat. Also called FRP, it is one of the least pricey materials for your bathtub. These are made from putting layers of fiberglass on top of one another and finishing with a coat of polyester resin. Marble. Some of the more luxurious bathtubs are made from real marble, but it is difficult to maintain. The material can be scratched by hard water and it may develop cracks if heat has been used. Porcelain on steel. The form of the tub is made of steel and the top surface is made of porcelain. It can last for very long under constant use and it is not easily damaged by scratching or chemicals. Solid surface. One of the newest materials for bathtub construction, this type of material has been used as an alternative for marble and granite. It can maintain the temperature of the water inside the tub for longer periods. |
